Nestled 2500 feet above the home farm of Shrimpton’s Hill, a special hut lays. Finished only a year ago, this hut has already been enjoyed by many, seen a marriage proposal, various birthday celebrations, with many more celebrations to come.
Rewind 40 or so years ago, while mustering on the family farm, John McKerchar and his father Hamish (HP) were admiring the view of the Canterbury plains to the Port Hills of Christchurch, when HP said to John, ‘how amazing would a hut be out here’. 40 years on, John said the same thing to his son Hamish while mustering on the same spot, ‘wouldn’t it be great to have a hut here’. Two years later the Hereford Hut was built.
Hamish and his wife Abby, with the help of good friends and family members designed what the hut would look like on the back of a beer box one afternoon and the Hereford Hut became a reality.
They found free weekends to trek up to the special spot to create an escape from the chaos of everyday life.
The hut means a lot to the McKerchar family and will be a spot where future generations can enjoy time together and unwind.
The family also understands the privilege of living rurally and want to bridge the gap between town and country to share this experience with others. So if you would like to book a weekend away with family or friends, enjoy hunting or just want to relax and soak in the baths overlooking the Canterbury plains with a glass of red wine, please get in touch…
